Sanding belt machines are a widely used abrasive tool. The most common
reason that narrow sanding belts break at the seam when being used on a Dynabrade 14000 Dynafile or any other air file sanding belt machine is due to a worn out
contact wheel. These type of hand held
air or electric sanding belt machines are designed to grind or sand down welds
on metals in hard to reach areas. The
operator can either use the slack of the sanding belts or apply pressure where
the sanding belt runs over the contact wheel to remove metal more
aggressively. If the contact wheel is
not changed after it is worn down this will affect the integrity of the sanding
belts seam. This may cause them to snap.
Another part of the contact arm, which should be replaced when worn down
are the platen pads that adhere to the side of the contact arms. Both the
contact wheels and the Platen pads should be in good condition to get maximum
life from the sanding belts seam.
The back of the
sanding belt is joined together by mylar tape.
This insures the strength of the sanding belts seam and allows them to
be used in either direction. The most
popular Sanding belt seam that is the pressed seam which allows the belts to be
used in both directions. This is called a butt joint. The color of the Mylar tape used for sanding
belts seams #24 grit thru #80 grit is blue. It is 7 mil and ¾” width. The color of the Mylar tape for sanding belts
#100 grit thru #150 grit is white. The tape is 5 mil. ¾” in width. Finally for
sanding belts #180 grit and finer the color is pink and it is 3 mil. ¾” in width.
The tape used on the back of surface conditioning belts is No-Maxx
1-1/2” width and white in color.
